Engineering ManagerThe Minnesota Star Tribune is looking for an
experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead and support our
teams of software engineers, test engineers, and cloud engineers as
they continue to develop and grow the future of our digital news
platform. As a Software Engineering Manager, you will be
responsible for hiring, budgeting, providing guidance and
direction, identifying growth and career advancement opportunities,
establishing and communicating expectations, and fostering a
healthy, open, inclusive, and collaborative culture.Our Engineering
department collaborates with various departments and functions
across the Minnesota Star Tribune, including with and within a
world-class news organization, so it is critical for this role to
have strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport
and trust with both engineering staff and other departments.An
ideal candidate has strong technical skills in web and cloud
technologies and exceptional communication, planning and
conflict-resolution abilities.Key Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of engineers in a collaborative environment where
there is opportunity for peer code reviews and an open exchange of
ideas and philosophies.
- Foster a culture of open communication, inclusion, creative
thinking, and respect.
- Participate in both strategic and tactical planning to set and
communicate expectations, complete projects within reasonable
timelines, and improve the resiliency and efficiency of our digital
platform.
- Identify training, growth, and career development opportunities
for your engineers.
- Partner with other teams in the organization to coordinate
efforts, create solutions, and improve communication.
- Identify and recommend new technologies and approaches-both
proprietary and open-source-that will enhance our software stack
and product quality for internal and external
customers.Qualifications:
- Leadership experience including, but not limited to, managing
software engineers, managing other types of teams, or running a
community organization.
- 3+ years of software or similar engineering experience.
- Experience presenting on technical topics to technical and
non-technical audiences.
- Strong mentorship ability to guide and grow direct and indirect
reports.
- Experience with Scrum and Kanban methodologies.
- Experience with modern web languages and/or frameworks.
- Knowledge of microservices and distributed systems
architecture.Preferred Qualifications:
- 3+ years of cloud infrastructure experience, AWS
preferred.
- Experience in writing scalable software in Python, Node.js, or
TypeScript (Next.js).
- Familiarity with monitoring and alerting services, such as
Datadog or AWS CloudWatch.
- Experience in Snowflake or managing data warehouses.
- Experience in test-driven and behavior-driven development
environments.
- Familiarity with cross-platform mobile application
