Job Description:

Strom Minnesota is currently looking for a Product Development Engineer for our client in Edina, MN.

SUMMARY
Work closely with Product Designer & Marketing/Sales to develop new products, product improvements and product extensions from specifications, product requirements and industrial designer sketches. Manage the product development cycle from concept development, prototype validation, and qualification into manufacturing. Conduct structural and dimensional analyses as required.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Lead or participate in cross-functional product innovation teams (depending on project assignment).
Analyze product definition document to determine feasibility of proposed product, including aesthetic, functional and structural requirements of product, target costs, scope of configurations.
Establish and actively manage project schedule from project kick off through qualification into manufacturing. Establish project milestones and report to management on a regular basis status with respect to schedule, product cost targets and problems that will impact schedule or product cost. Proactively provide alternative solutions to these problems & recommendations of how to proceed.
Confer with Product Designer & Marketing/Sales to clarify or resolve problems, and develop design concepts. Prepare or direct preparation of product or system layout using solid modeling CAD platform. Perform kinematic and structural analysis (as required). Facilitate virtual design reviews or design review based on prototype (as required). Direct and coordinate fabrication and assembly of prototype product or system by R&D personnel. Establish cost estimates for the product. Plan and develop experimental test programs designed to confirm validity of design approach and/or test prototype with respect to performance criteria Analyze test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications. Confer with personnel from engineering and/or other departments to prepare design modifications as required. Work closely with Purchasing to source new technologies and technology partners. Assist qualifying suppliers with respect to capability and quality. Prepare or direct preparation of detailed drawings, methods of manufacturing, label, instructions & user's manual.
Provide Marketing deliverables on schedule to support product launch.

Prepare technical information for use by:
- Engineering Manager or upper management for long and short-range planning
- Marketing for product launch
- Sales personnel in sales training
- Customer Care technical support services
Design custom applications of released product design to meet custom product requests approved by Sales.
Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise and coordinate by project, the work content of cross-functional team when assigned as project leader. This
person will direct drafting and technical support resources to meet his/her project time and documentation requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology or reasonable equivalent from an
accredited four-year college or university and 5 to 8 years of practical and relevant experience.
COMPUTER SKILLS
Proficient in Solid Works or Inventor CAD platforms. Must be able to create and
edit/manipulate Word and Excel documents. Experience with FEA software and MS Project is a plus.
